I’ve had a very busy last few months. Starting a new job, moving to a new place and basically reorganizing my entire life has left me feeling exhausted. My friend Blair warned me last Friday to take it easy on myself, to rest, to cancel plans, to curl up and be unapologetically lazy. Joel reminded [...]
Cleansing and detoxing have been all the rage these days. I’m actually doing a little cleansing this week myself (if you want to join, let me know). I find September to be an outstanding time of year to reboot the system, mix up the workout routine and just sort of upgrade all around. But today [...]
I know, I know, you’re probably thinking “DAMNIT, what now?!” (kinda like when you read Damnit, I Love Peanut Butter). But, if you’re snacking on hummus on the reg. thinking it’s a super healthy snack, think again. The problem my friends, is oil (among other things), unnatural, chemically processed, funky, rancid, vegetable oil. Oils have been a confusing [...]
I was with a friend over the weekend who’s got the most adorable baby in the whole world, literally. Her husband was making us some amazing, fresh-from-the-ocean seafood for dinner. As we sipped wine and waited for dinner, we also enjoyed a slice of fresh bread, or two. I reached for a bit of butter, [...]
As I go through the last week of Yoga teacher training, I thought I might recap a few (of the million) things I’ve learned. #1. Hips don’t lie. Sitting at a desk for 7 years has made my hips really tight, my core really weak and my back a bit hunched over. Once we’re on [...]
Oh man, you guys, I’ve been doing so much yoga. I’ve started my first 200 hour teacher training program at Yoga Vida and it’s been awesome. Well, except for the whole sitting on my ass for 7 hours a day with my legs crossed thing. That part sucks but, the rest, is awesome. So I [...]
Sooooo, I just read somewhere that half of Americans, if you don’t count pizza, french fries and ketchup, don’t eat any vegetables at all. Any. vegetables. at. all! Holy hell, you guys. I can’t, this makes me so upset. Now, if you’re reading this blog post or get my weekly newsletter, I feel like I [...]
I went for a run outside yesterday. Spring is here in New York and I finally felt like it was warm enough to jog along the water in DUMBO, where I live. Basically, I am a pansy when it comes to facing the cold so, it’s been a long while since I laced up the ‘ole Asics [...]
Results we’ve never gotten before, come from attempts we’ve never made before. What really chaps my ass, in the attempt to inspire and empower people to reclaim their health, lose weight and start feeling better, are sentences that start with “I can’t”. When we start sentences with “I can’t” what we really mean is “I won’t.” We won’t [...]
One of the biggest obstacles we face on our quest to live our happiest, healthiest lives, is successfully navigating the multitude of mixed nutritional messages, conflicting expert health opinions and complexity of the modern food landscape. I’d like to address some of the confusion out there, if I may. I’d like to make the case for simplicity. [...]
Last night we wound up watching the finale of The Biggest Loser. For me, there is nothing quite like watching Jillian Michaels shout at people. I love Jillian Michaels. She and Richard Simmons are my idols. Yeah, you just read that and no, I’m not kidding. So Joel and I were watching The Biggest Loser [...]
I recently reread my favorite nutrition book. This one book made a huge difference in my life, my weight and my health. I am a big fan of rereading good books in general but, this one has so many dog-eared pages and notes in its margin, that I will probably need a new one soon. [...]
I’ve had a very busy last few months. Starting a new job, moving to a new place and basically reorganizing my entire life has left me feeling exhausted.
My friend Blair warned me last Friday to take it easy on myself, to rest, to cancel plans, to curl up and be unapologetically lazy. Joel reminded me that I’m always saying I want to do less but, never actually wind up doing less.
I never say no because I want to see my friends. I never say no because I feel bad. I never say no because I get the guilties and want to show up for everyone and everything in my life.
Well, I had to say no this week because I wound up sick.
There is no shortage of nutrition information circulating out there. Each expert with a shiny book and website claims to have the answer, the missing link, the secret end all to rapid weight loss and long term health.
What always confuses me though, is that so many of these experts conflict with one another, right? I mean, what. the. hell?
One says that eggs are the most healthy and perfect food we can eat, the next says eggs make you fat and cause heart attacks.
One says that fruit is the best food for human consumption, another tells us that fruit is the best way to plump the hell up in a hurry.
One says that eating soy is the best source of plant protein, another says everyone is allergic to it and oh, could cause, you know… cancer!
High-carb, low carb, gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, paleo, cave man, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, fruititarian, Mediterrenean, Atkins, South Beach, the Zone, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Pritikin, Nutrisytem, Sugar Busters, have I left any out? I’m sure I have. I’m sure there are many I’ve yet to even hear about.
It’s overwhelming right? The headlines are hard to keep up with the experts are hard to understand and frankly, I am sick of hearing about all of it. I know, kind of silly because I’m literally writing about it right now.
Anyway, here is what I have come to believe. I think it makes sense, maybe you will too.
I find September to be an outstanding time of year to reboot the system, mix up the workout routine and just sort of upgrade all around.
But today I want to talk about one really important place that we often overlook when we’re trying to spruce up our health. You might be surprised to learn that this place has been the largest dumping ground for thousands of synthetic chemicals for decades.
Synthetic chemicals = no bueno for our health or our waistlines.
"…people have commented on my weight and complexion!"
