Half Marathon Training Day: ? (almost there?)

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

I’m about to run 10 miles.

I wouldn’t say I am looking forward to it but I’m also not terrified, which is good.  Over the past two months I have run a lot more than I’ve ever run before.  Well, since cross country in middle school but, I also haven’t exactly trained as much as I was ‘supposed’ to for this thing either.  I didn’t follow that neat little calendar of runs that you can import into Google Calendar and there were some weeks I didn’t run at all.  Oops, whatever, I’m cool with it.

I realized a few things.

1. I can totally do this.  NBD.  Just because I’m not in the same shape I was in in middle school (it’s funny to even type that) doesn’t mean I’m no longer a runner.  I feel like being a runner doesn’t go away, it’s innate.  I know some people who love running and some people who hate it.  I don’t feel either way about it but, it’s something that’s always been relatively easy for me, if… Read More

When your closet makes you feel fat.

When you’re feeling down about your weight there is nothing, and I mean nothing, worse than a closet stuffed full of ill-fitting, unflattering clothes that make you feel like shit.

Think about it.  You start most days, most nights out and most big events in life, by heading to your closet and deciding how you’re going to present yourself to the world.  If that closet isn’t an ally in making you feel confident and beautiful, its an enemy.

When I was struggling with my weight, I can’t tell you how many times my day or my night out was ruined because I couldn’t find anything to wear that made me feel beautiful.  Did I say beautiful?  I meant that didn’t make me feel like the most hideous whale that ever walked the streets of New York.

It may seem silly and dramatic but it’s not, not when its you. Read More

Half Marathon Training: Day 1

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

At the strong suggestion of a friend, I entered the lottery for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in D.C. this year and much to my chagrin, I got in.   I decided that I would share my training progress with the hope of inspiring you to challenge yourself physically this year as well.

I am quite scared but also very excited.  I feel like that’s the way it should be when we’re setting goals, right?  At least that’s what Pinterest has been saying since the New Year.  I swear I’ve seen “comfort zone” about 1,782 times in the past month.  Since I assume that running 13.something miles will not be comfortable for me, I feel like this counts.

I’m just home from my first 3 mile run and I have to say that it sucked.

When we’re just too damn tired to lose weight.

I’ve had a very busy last few months.  Starting a new job, moving to a new place and basically reorganizing my entire life has left me feeling exhausted.

My friend Blair warned me last Friday to take it easy on myself, to rest, to cancel plans, to curl up and be unapologetically lazy.  Joel reminded me that I’m always saying I want to do less but, never actually wind up doing less.

I never say no because I want to see my friends.  I never say no because I feel bad.  I never say no because I get the guilties and want to show up for everyone and everything in my life.

Well, I had to say no this week because I wound up sick. Read More

No me gusta Earth Balance

I was with a friend over the weekend who’s got the most adorable baby in the whole world, literally.

Her husband was making us some amazing, fresh-from-the-ocean seafood for dinner.  As we sipped wine and waited for dinner, we also enjoyed a slice of fresh bread, or two.  I reached for a bit of butter, and she pulled out some Earth Balance.

She noticed I went for the real butter instead and so she asked what I thought about Earth Balance. She’d bought it in an effort to eat healthier.

Oh nooooooo!  I hate when I have to tell someone how much I dislike the product they are currently chewing on. (As a health coach, this actually happens a lot). Read More

Best 4th in the North

I went to Lake George for the 4th.  It was awesome.  It’s such a gorgeous place and I was with some really fun people on some really fun boats.   There was a cute baby, some cute dogs and even some delicious ice cream.

One morning up there, Joel was mixing up our morning smoothie.  Apparently he forgot the bottom of the blender though, so when he picked it up the kitchen floor got a super healthy breakfast instead.

The green crap all over the floor sparked some discussion.  A few people had begun a green smoothie breakfast as well and had been enjoying them a whole bunch.  They’d even lost some weight already with that having been the only difference in their routine.  Oooooo-oop! OOOOO-ooop!

This always makes me happy.

But as we walked around the Ticonderoga fair later that evening, it was clear to me that there were many people around us that hadn’t ever had a green smoothie. Read More
